Thailand- The land of tuk tuks, cheap suits & spring rolls

We make no apologies for not updating this earlier, as sitting around on beaches in the hot sun is very taxing and we could not conjur up the energy to update the blog.

We have lost track of the days so will not bore you with deatiled blow by blow accounts of days, again those of you in a hurry here is the summary:

Since the last blog we...
  • Lounged around on Karon Beach (down from Patong Beach in Phuket)
  • Headed south to Aonang (just out of Krabi) & did more of the same - including a speed boat day trip snorkelling & checking out more remote islands, elephant trekking & more beach action
  • Flew to Bangkok & headed to Kho San Road, the Grand Palace, varoius other monuments & the ping pong show.
Now for the longer version.............

We mentioned in the last blog how we "scammed the scammers". To elaborate, we were happily strolling around the different stalls (either a travel agency, massage joint or ripped off t-shirt/cd/dvd stall). We were approached by a sweedish gentleman who asked us to partake in a competition. Now we all know Nadia's LOVE for competitions, so the chance to win a laptop or $1000 cash among other things we just could not refuse.

The scam was your old scratch and win & the promotion was being run by a new hotel on Patong Beach. All we had to do was sit through a 90 minute presentation and then we would be told what prize we had won (yeah that old chestnut). The scam did however involve a free taxi to the hotel that was promoting the prize to a beach we had not seen. We preceeded to take our free taxi to the Hotel ditch the preso & cheeckly managed to get a ride back, a saving of 600 baht! or NZ$30. A small win, but a win none the less in a land of constant trickery & sacmming of unsuspecting tourists.

This picture was taken from Patong Beach where we had dinner one night. Patong Beach has lots of tourists & lots of rubbish on the beach which makes an otherwise beautiful beach not quite as inviting.

Above is me resting up on Mia Beach where the movie 'the Beach' starring Leonado Decaprio was filmed. The sand here was beautiful..............This is the day we went on a speed boat trip & went snorkelling.Above- Elephant trekking in Ao Nang. A fun ride for about 30 minutes then the novelty begins to wear off.

Above- A self portrait at Raliay beach

Nadia with one of the guards at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. You can not wear shorts or singlets, so it made for a sweaty day.

Above- more action at the Grand Palace in Bangkok- more cheap tacky jewellery/architechture than the $2 shop, but impressive none the less.

The famous Kho San Road - this place was great and very lively. At night a real party atmosphere - the best spring rolls we have ever tasted, some great shopping & more tourists than Thais!
We are now in Vietnam where are about to start a 10 day Intrepid tour which will take us from the bottom of Vietnam (Ho Chim Min City- Saigon) to the top, Hanoi. Nadia has us all organised to go to a water park this afternoon. So until next time.....................
